Finasteride may also reduce the chance that surgery on the prostate will be needed. The brand of Fintasteride used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia is Proscar. Finasteride (Propecia or Proscar) blocks an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which is necessary to change testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary.
